RADIANT - MORE THAN JUST RADIOLOGY
By Erik Stavlund, Senior Consultant
Radiology often brings to mind the iconic black and white x-ray image. The reality, however,
is that Epic Radiant® has little to do with the actual image itself. Images are viewed, annotated
and stored in a Picture Archival and Communication System (PACS) separate from Radiant® that is
not provided by Epic. Radiant® is a tool that was designed for Radiology workflow and study
management. However, it can be easily adapted to other areas within your health system that
manage studies.
At a recent implementation, I began with a common practice; the walk-through. The manager of
this particular clinic gave us a tour of the Radiology department that included: the classic
X-Ray, MRI, Mammography and Ultrasound modalities. The department also showed rooms for treadmill
studies, EMGs and Spirometry. When we arrived at this part of the walk-through, my colleague from
the client site said, “These aren't radiology studies, so we won't be able to use Radiant® for
these three rooms”. The manager, of course, was taken aback. Seventy-five percent of their
department would have one workflow, and the other twenty-five percent would not. The reality,
however, is that Radiant® is capable of handling the workflow of these studies.
Radiant® was designed to be a study management tool. As such, it handles workflows that
involve a technologist and split billing. When one considers the areas of Cardiology, Cath Labs,
Vascular Labs, Neurodiagnostics or Spirometry, a common thread appears. All of these areas have a
study which involves a technologist's workflow, a technical fee and a professional fee. Radiant®
has already been implemented into all of these areas at some healthcare organizations.
Epic was inspired by this unique application of Radiant® at some of their client sites and thus
used it to create a new module for purchase; Cardiant®. Cardiant® blends the study management of
Radiant® with Op-Time for the management of more invasive procedures. With the recent Spring 2008
release of Radiant®, '-ologists' no longer have to sign off upon Radiant® studies from Study
Review. Rather, they now have the option of reviewing results and signing off from the In
Basket. This new inclusion makes it even easier to implement Radiant® outside of the traditional
Radiology department. Consider how these alternative solutions could help your organization use
Radiant® to manage more than you ever imagined was possible.
